Welcome To Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth

Great Yarmouth is a perfect destination for all the family for all sorts of reasons. The beach here stretches for miles and is uncrowded with plenty of room. A section of beach near the small wooden pier is cleaned daily and smoothed over by a raking tractor ready for visitors.

The shops in the high street are wide and varied, all sorts of surprises are in store such as the superb Chinese Shop, and if you fancy a bit of a giggle then why not go into the House Of Wax and see some impressive works, not to mention the hilarious mirrors.

Great Yarmouth is the perfect destination if you want to keep your kids entertained for the afternoon, day or for the whole week. There is so much to do from Amazonia, The Sea Life Center, The Model Village, Fun Fair, Horse and Cart Rides, Penny Arcades and so much more.

There is even a large TV outside on the promenade so you dont miss that important world event, I managed to catch a few minutes of Olympic cycling on my visit in August!

The most impressive aspect about Great Yarmouth is its space. The town has undergone significant development over the last 5 years with hardly a sight of graffiti, no cruising cars, very little litter, even the horses have road manners! The service by staff in excellent in fast food places and in the attractions despite the numbers of people dealt with on a day to day basis and you really feel welcomed.

At Great Yarmouth there is a sense of space, with the wide Miami style pavements, a sense of safety in a family atmosphere where everyone is having a good time and a sense of variety to last your holiday.

The fun and attractions turn a page during the evening, the Model Village is illuminated, the fairground lights glow and bring the evening alive, shows and circus entertainment attracts you to venues and the cinema shows the latest film releases.

If you are looking for a cost effective holiday in the UK, that is going to be cheaper perhaps than Dorset or Cornwall, then Great Yarmouth or the Norfolk Coast is a definite possibility. A family of four and a budget of around £1000 could certainly give you a well deserved week break full of all the entertainment you could possibly want from your holiday.

Events

Great Yarmouth doesnt stop moving until late evening and there is plenty of things to see and do throughout the year.

The pier at Yarmouth regularly has famous faces from the world of Comedy to perform, most recently Jimmy Carr and later on in 2008 Roy Chubby Brown and other famous faces will be appearing.

Every Wednesday evening during July and August there is a fireworks display from the pier sponsored by Eon after the sun sets.

Events in 2008 include the Maritime Festival (6th - 7th September 2008) with tall ships, shanty songs, seafood of course, aswell as demonstrations and fun for all the family. The popularity of Bowls has brought about its own festival which one of the largest outdoor bowls tournaments in the UK.

Great Yarmouth Racecourse has regular race meetings and Yarmouth Stadium has regular Stock Car and Banger Racing.

For a funpacked varied holiday, Great Yarmouth must be on your list of places to spend at least one day... with more than enough to do for weeks!

Out & About

Entering Great Yarmouth you immediately see its offshore windfarm at the northerly part of the beach far away from the pedestrianised popular sections. The windfarm, one of many throughout the country generating much needed power at little impact on the environment, is unique in that it is the first offshore windfarm in the UK. On my visit in August typically they were not working due to a technical fault, impressive to see though nonetheless.

The drive along the promenade takes you by a mini lake with pedalos, tennis courts that are free to use complete with nets in good condition, and of course a few bowling greens, clearly a popular sport for the retiring locals.

The road from the courts to the other end where the fun fair is located I would guess is around about 1km, and during the course of your travels you may cover some distance.

The beachfront has numerous toilets all kept in superb condition, and many small, often family run cafes where sandwiches, toasties and other lunch time delights are served. You cant really compare lunch or an ice cream at the beach side, its one of life's true british pleasures.

There is plenty of choice of shops, from the market stalls, to auction shops, holiday souvenirs, and at the very top of the high street is a shopping centre with high street brand names that you will recognise. Shopping here is as good as anywhere.

I really cannot emphasise enough what a pleasure it was to holiday in Great Yarmouth and it is no longer untrendy to have a holiday in Britain thanks to Norfolk, coastal towns such as Sheringham, Cromer and the truly brilliant Great Yarmouth.
